Last night Steve and I finished out Christmas shopping at Pintemps. It is a very nice store and I continue to be amazed at how well Steve speaks French. He managed the entire shopping experience with no english.
This morning I watched more french TV - I found a show that I think is the same as the View, but hosted by men. Then I watched my new favorite cooking show that I think is like a reality show: someone makes a meal and then a famous chef discusses the method used and how it turns out. Luckily for me they post the name of the dish being prepared so I have enough time to look it up in my french/english dictonary and really understand what has been prepared. Love it!

This morning I spent time unpacking and watching tv. I was hoping I would end up like D. Hannah in Splash and pick up the language in one day, but no luck. I am now off to research language schools.

Then we moved to Paris
My first days in Paris are going as expected as I start trying to settle into my new culture. A few things I need to learn to adjust to:
1. the french keyboard - its not terribly different but Ive been a rather fast typest up until now. I can not find the apostrophe.
2. the sun does not rise until 830am which makes the day seem very short. At least we are coming up on the shortest day of the year and from there it will get better.
3. the language - I am so lucky that Im in a place where most people speak english. I need intensive french lessons - which I hope will start on Jan 8th.
I opened a bank account today and Im so thankful that for such an important thing I dealt with a nice english speaking banker. After the bank I went back to our apartment and met the movers who brought all of our stuff that we have been without over the last 6 weeks. Somehow we will make it fit.
Our apartment is great: quite large for paris, 3 rooms plus a kitchen, 2 bathrooms. The toilet in the main bathroom is electric and so loud we can only flush it between 8am and 10pm. Ill post pictures once I find time to take some. The apartment has everything we need so Im pleased Steve did such a good job finding our home for the next two years.
This afternoon Ive been walking around and I spent a bit of time at the food hall at Galeries Lafayette. It was one of the better food experiences Ive ever had and anyone with an interest in food should come visit and get to the galeries asap. It holds an amazing amount of everything gourmet.
Work: I can not officially work in France until I have a physical. I will have the physical on the morning of Jan. 8 - I was told by my banker that I got an appt. quickly. After that I should get into the groove of going to work etc. After the physical I will get a laptop, phone, desk, etc. Our office is quite nice and it will take us about 30-35 minutes to get there. So tomorrow and Thursday I will organize and unpack and pack for South Africa where we will fly on Thurs night. We tried to get the cable and internet set up this week but it was not possible. When we get back and get that scheduled we will then have a home phone, vonage, and cells.
